Tragedy struck on the waterways of the Shiroro Dam in Niger State on Saturday morning, as a passenger boat capsized, leaving several passengers feared dead.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the incident reportedly occurred around 10 a.m. on July 26 between Sherin Waterway and Kwata Market in the Zumba area of Shiroro Local Government Area.
According to sources who spoke with security analyst Zagazola Makama, the ill-fated boat was conveying an unspecified number of passengers from Shaita Village in Muya Local Government Area to the weekly market at Kwata when it overturned mid-journey.
The wooden boat, which belonged to a local operator identified as Mallam Danlami Musa, was said to have taken off from Shaita before encountering difficulties that led to the accident.
Following the incident, a combined rescue team made up of Marine Police personnel and local divers was swiftly deployed to the scene to commence search and rescue operations.

At the time of this report, the exact number of casualties remains unknown. Rescue efforts are still underway, as authorities work to recover possible survivors and retrieve the bodies of those feared to have drowned.
