Dr. Akinwumi Adesina is set to step down as President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) on September 1, 2025. The announcement, which marks the end of his decade-long leadership, was made during his final official visit to Nigeria at an event in Oyo State.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Adesina used the occasion to express his heartfelt gratitude to Nigeria for its unwavering support throughout his two terms in office.

He specifically thanked the nation’s leadership, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, as well as members of the National Assembly and state governors.

During his speech, Adesina extended his thanks to the people of Nigeria for their consistent backing highlighting the significant achievements of the bank under his leadership.
He proudly noted that the AfDB’s capital base had grown exponentially, expanding from a solid $93 billion in 2015 to an impressive $318 billion by the end of his tenure.
He also shared that the bank is now widely recognized as the best and most transparent multilateral financial institution in the world, a testament to the reforms and governance changes implemented during his time.
Looking to the future, Adesina confirmed that a new leader, Sidi Ould Tah, has been elected to take over the role. Tah is expected to officially assume the presidency of the AfDB on September 1, 2025, marking a new era for the institution.
