EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to the company, most of the accounts originated from fraud networks in Southeast Asia and were blocked before scammers could fully exploit them.
The fraudulent operations commonly involved fake investment schemes, including cryptocurrency scams and pyramid schemes, designed to deceive users into sending money. In one notable case, Meta partnered with OpenAI to dismantle a scam traced to Cambodia, where criminals used ChatGPT to craft convincing messages embedded with links to malicious WhatsApp chats.
To counter the rising threat, WhatsApp has introduced new safety features. One feature warns users when they are added to group chats by unknown individuals, offering a “safety overview” that provides details about the group and advice on avoiding scams, along with the option to exit immediately.
Meta also urged users to remain vigilant, warning against strangers who promote “low-risk” investments, promise quick returns, or demand payments for fake bills. Such tactics, the company noted, often prey on people’s fears or trust to manipulate them into financial traps.
Reaffirming its commitment, Meta said it would continue removing suspicious accounts and improving protective measures.

“We’ve all been there: someone you don’t know trying to lure you with easy money or quick profits,” the company stated, emphasizing that its focus is on keeping users safe.
