The victim, a man who had recently gotten married and whose name is being withheld pending family notification, was standing in front of his shop when the live wire collapsed.
The scene was described by eyewitnesses as horrifying, with the victim’s body lying on the ground for an extended period, the wire still atop him, emitting sparks and smoke.
A video documenting the grim aftermath has been circulating on social media, drawing widespread attention to the avoidable nature of the tragedy.

The death has prompted a strong reaction from Ossy Onuko, the Managing Director of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA). Onuko labeled the incident a direct result of “negligence to safety,” and used the opportunity to justify his agency’s frequent, and often criticized, enforcement campaigns.
He described the practice of having shops and businesses under high-tension wires as a “suicide mission” and insisted that ACTDA’s efforts, which some residents view as a “witch-hunt,” are genuinely aimed at preserving lives.
Onuko concluded by urging the public to take personal responsibility for their safety rather than waiting for regulatory enforcement.
