Samuel Badekale, the overall best graduating student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the 2023/2024 academic session, has been awarded the prestigious Erasmus Mundus scholarship to pursue postgraduate studies in Europe.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Badekale, who earned a perfect 5.00 CGPA in Cell Biology and Genetics, is the only Nigerian and West African student selected for the 2024 intake of the Biomolecular and Neuroscience (BiNe) program.

Badekale’s selection into the European Union–funded Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree program marks a major academic milestone. His two-year master’s program will take him across three top European institutions: Université Côte d’Azur in France, University of Genoa in Italy, and University of Osnabrück in Germany.
The program, known as BiNe (Biomolecular and Neuroscience), focuses on advanced topics in neuroscience, biomembranes, and experimental medicine—fields closely aligned with Badekale’s academic passion and research ambitions.
Sharing the news on social media, Badekale reflected on his humble beginnings in Mushin, Lagos, writing: “A young boy from Mushin, Lagos, with a big dream—to explore the world and make a difference through science. Dreams do come true.”

He also encouraged fellow Nigerian students not to lose faith in the value of education: “Education isn’t a scam. It’s still one of the most powerful tools for change. Trust God, stay focused, and never stop striving for excellence.”
His remarkable achievement has sparked widespread admiration across Nigeria, with many seeing his story as a symbol of hope and possibility for students from modest backgrounds.
