Speaking to a large gathering of well-wishers at his Bodija residence in Ibadan on Monday, the former Oyo State governor reflected on a journey spanning more than three decades through the complex traditional hierarchy of Ibadanland.
“I never imagined destiny would call me to the throne at this time,” Oba Ladoja admitted, visibly emotional as he recalled receiving news of the passing of his predecessor, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. “It was a rude shock. I had thought our king would still reign for another five to ten years,” he said.
Oba Ladoja began his traditional journey as Jagun Balogun Olubadan on October 1, 1993, and rose steadily through the 36-step ladder of the Balogun line. This rigorous and time-honoured process culminated in his current position after more than 31 years of service.

Reflecting on his early days, he remembered notable figures present at his elevation to Jagun, including the late MKO Abiola, the late Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, and several former governors and cultural icons.
“There were many coincidences,” he noted. “I was born in 1944, and I am now the 44th Olubadan. This shows that God’s plan is always perfect. Many of those who started this journey with me are no longer here. It has been a journey of patience, perseverance, and grace.”
Upon his return to Ibadan after a two-month stay outside the state, Oba Ladoja first visited his ancestral home at Isale-Osi in Ibadan South-West LGA, the place where his journey to the throne began. “That was where I went first, to pray and reflect. It felt like coming full circle,” he said.
He paid glowing tribute to the late Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin, whom he described as a monarch who upheld tradition with dignity.
He also extended condolences to his family, the Olubadan in Council, and the people of Ibadanland.
The monarch elect expressed gratitude to the Olubadan in Council for unanimously endorsing his nomination. “If they had not approved my nomination, what could I have done?” he said humbly. “I am grateful, and I assure them that our bond will only grow stronger.”
He revealed that he would soon begin consultations with key government and traditional stakeholders including the Governor of Oyo State, the Oluwo, and the Araba of Ibadan to finalise his coronation arrangements.
Oba Ladoja called on all sons and daughters of Ibadan, both at home and abroad, to support him with prayers as he prepares to take on the enormous responsibilities of the throne.
“I ask for your prayers for God’s wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to guide me in this sacred duty. I pray that my reign will bring peace, prosperity, and progress to Ibadanland,” he declared.
