EKO HOT BLOG reports that Makinde made the proposal on Friday at his residence in Ikolaba, Ibadan, during a Sallah homage visit by Muslim leaders, traditional rulers, and political stakeholders after Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the Agodi Eid Ground.
The delegation was led by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal and included prominent figures such as the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Rashidi Ladoja; former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; and Alhaji Dawodu Makanjuola, Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta.
The governor, while congratulating the Muslim community on the Eid celebration, expressed appreciation for their continuous prayers and support over the last six years of his administration. Reflecting on his time in office, he said a portion of his tenure was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and political distractions surrounding his second-term campaign.
Makinde said, “I’ve effectively had only about five out of eight years to govern, and that’s why I believe that a single tenure of five or six years will help leaders concentrate fully on development goals.”
He noted that while the idea had been previously raised at the National Assembly, it deserves fresh consideration to enhance governance in the country.
Senator Ladoja, speaking on behalf of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, commended Makinde’s efforts and prayed for greater achievements in his administration.

Deputy Governor Lawal also used the occasion to urge the Muslim faithful to uphold the teachings of sacrifice, obedience, and trust in God, as emphasised in the Qur’an. He thanked the governor for prioritising workers’ welfare and timely salary payments, calling for continued cooperation from residents to realise more democratic dividends.
