The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has publicly denied claims by local contractors that his administration owes them over N5.2 billion. The contractors recently staged a protest at the Minister’s gate, demanding payment for jobs they say they executed.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Wike responded to the allegations during a Tuesday event at the Lower Usuma Dam, stating that the debts predate his time in office. He accused civil servants of awarding many of the questionable contracts without ministerial approval.

He described the contractors’ protest as an act of blackmail, intended to intimidate him into paying for what he called “unauthorized” and “frivolous” spending.

The minister alleged that corrupt officials used the practice of splitting projects into small sums to corner funds. Wike warned that his administration would not be blackmailed into continuing the “business as usual” culture of questionable contract awards.
He emphasized that he came to office with a clear mandate to reform the FCT Administration, and he would not pay for projects that did not follow due process.
