EKO HOT BLOG reports that the governor announced the approval on Wednesday during a visit by the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, to Government House in Port Harcourt, where he reaffirmed the state’s commitment to providing a secure and welcoming environment for corps members.
Fubara described Rivers State as peaceful and accommodating, noting that improved security and hospitality have made it one of the most preferred posting destinations for prospective corps members and their parents.
He said the state has continued to prioritise the protection of lives, the safeguarding of property, and the provision of essential infrastructure, which he described as the main responsibility of government. He directed the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benino Anabraba, to carry out a facility assessment and submit a report for immediate implementation.
The governor also promised to provide office accommodation for the newly established NYSC regional office and announced plans to relocate or renovate the NYSC State Secretariat, which he said no longer fits the standard required.
Fubara stated that although the NYSC is a federal institution, the people who benefit directly from its infrastructure are residents of Rivers State, adding that his administration remains committed to ensuring that all facilities are conducive for both residents and visitors.
Brigadier General Nafiu, who is currently touring orientation camps nationwide, disclosed that 2,586 corps members are undergoing the 2025 Batch C programme in Rivers State, making it the fourth most preferred deployment location after Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory and Oyo State. He added that 8,349 indigenes of Rivers State are serving across other states.
The NYSC boss highlighted the significant contribution corps members make to national development, noting that their service saves the state an estimated fifteen billion naira annually when evaluated at full salary rates.
He thanked the governor for allocating land for the State Coordinator’s residence and for supporting the improvement of camp facilities. Nafiu also called for the reconstitution of state and local government NYSC governing boards and requested the relocation of the NYSC office currently situated in the crowded Mile Two market area in Diobu.
He noted that the NYSC has grown from 2,764 corps members at its inception in 1973 to over 400,000 participants nationwide today, with more than 650,000 graduates eligible for mobilisation in 2026, stressing the urgent need to expand facilities across the country to meet rising demand.
