The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, has accepted full responsibility for the derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train on Tuesday.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Opeifa made the declaration on Wednesday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

He assured Nigerians that the incident, which occurred along the Kaduna corridor, would be thoroughly investigated.
“Beyond apologising to Nigeria, I want to say as the Managing Director and Chief Executive, I take full responsibility. In matters of safety, there is no indifference. Once it happens, the Chief Executive must take responsibility, and in this case, I am taking responsibility,” Opeifa said.

The NRC boss acknowledged that the derailment was avoidable but promised measures would be taken to prevent future occurrences.
“I want to assure Nigerians that incidents like this are not expected, not prayed for, and should not happen. But when they do, they bring out the best in us. Just as we shut down the Warri-Itakpe route three weeks ago for safety reasons, we will continue to take proactive measures to safeguard our passengers,” he added.
The Abuja-Kaduna train derailed around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, shortly after departing the Federal Capital Territory for Kaduna.
