The government explained that traffic congestion has long been a challenge to medical rescue efforts in Lagos, with critical minutes often lost while conventional ambulances struggle to maneuver through gridlock. With the new bikes, trained paramedics can quickly stabilize victims, offer first aid, and prepare them for transportation to hospitals once larger ambulances arrive.
Officials emphasized that the initiative is aimed at reducing preventable deaths, particularly from road accidents, sudden illnesses, and other emergencies that require immediate attention. By cutting down response time, the state hopes to give residents a better chance of survival during life-threatening situations.
The Commissioner for Health noted that the introduction of ambulance bikes is part of a wider upgrade in emergency medical services, including improved communication systems, expansion of ambulance points across the state, and investment in digital monitoring for quicker dispatching.
He added that responders have been specially trained to handle critical cases on the spot, using the limited but vital equipment the motorcycles carry.
