Uwoghiren had been in poor health for around three years and reportedly unable to walk.
The Edo State Migration Agency, led by Lucky Agazuma, says information about Godstime’s ordeal reached them four months ago. Acting on reports, Governor Monday Okpebholo mobilised action with the Nigerian Embassy, and the rescue was carried out. Uwoghiren was flown back to Benin City, arriving at Benin Airport around 1 p.m., and rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital in a wheelchair barely conscious.

Agazuma noted that initial efforts to engage Uwoghiren’s immediate family were frustrated.
One of his sisters reportedly rejected rescue attempts for several months. But the governor persisted, insisting on bringing him home. Upon arrival, medical staff began emergency care.
His mother, Susan Uwoghiren, recounted that Godstime had left home to learn truck driving. Later, he went to Burkina Faso under unclear circumstances, maintaining contact with the family for a while until the calls stopped. The family only learned he was severely ill and paralysed after investigations.
Governor Okpebholo has been praised for stepping in, with calls for Nigerians to beware of the lure of foreign promises.
The state government cautioned youths against falling prey to false opportunities abroad, especially during times like the yuletide when some are more vulnerable.
The rescue shines a light on broader issues: how jealousy and ill intent among acquaintances can lead to tragedy; the challenges families face when loved ones are abroad with little support; and the need for government efforts to protect citizens wherever they are. Medical, legal, and welfare support are now being coordinated for Uwoghiren.
As Uwoghiren receives treatment, Edo State promises to investigate the poisoning allegations fully and ensure his recovery is supported.
The story has stirred empathy across Edo, and raised awareness about safeguarding citizens abroad and holding those responsible to account.
