Nigerian chef and restaurateur Hilda Baci has opened up about the frightening moment when her giant pot of jollof rice suddenly collapsed during her Guinness World Record attempt.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that Baci admitted that the incident nearly broke her spirit. “When we had the mishap with the pot, my first few seconds, my heart was in my hands. I was very scared, very worried,” she recalled.

According to her, the record was not her main concern at that point; instead, she wanted to ensure the food she and her team worked tirelessly to prepare was enjoyed. “For me, the record was not the most important thing.
It was important that people got to taste and enjoy the food,” she explained. Surprisingly, she added that the collapse “was a blessing in disguise” because it made distributing the rice easier.
The dramatic scene unfolded on September 12 at the World Jollof Festival in Lagos, where Baci and her team cooked nearly 8,780 kilograms of jollof rice in a custom pot about six meters wide, designed to hold roughly 23,000 litres.

Disaster struck when the crane lifting the pot failed, causing one side to cave in. Fortunately, the food itself remained safe.
Guinness World Records later confirmed Baci’s feat as the largest pot of jollof rice ever cooked after reviewing video and photographic evidence.
She said transparency was key, noting that her team quickly contacted the adjudicator to ensure proper documentation before proceeding.
Reflecting on her achievement, Baci described herself as “a child of grace,” adding that this second Guinness record following her 2023 cooking marathon of 93 hours, 11 minutes was proof of God’s goodness in her journey.
