Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan has reopened for operations following a five-month modernization closure.
The airport’s reopening comes ahead of the presidential flight scheduled for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The first aircraft landed on Wednesday at 9:14 a.m. as part of a test return to service.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the upgrade is intended to bring the facility to international standards. A special adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, confirmed that with the landing, the airport is now safer and equipped to handle more advanced flights.
Governor Makinde had earlier initiated the project in 2024. Work included improvements to the VIP lounge, fire safety systems, and installation of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility. The modernization also aligns with plans to accommodate high-profile arrivals tied to the forthcoming coronation event.
Officials say the runway and associated infrastructure have been reworked to meet stricter safety and operational criteria. The upgrades are expected to not only improve domestic connectivity but eventually pave the way for international flights in the future.
Passengers, airlines, and stakeholders are optimistic. Many believe the reopening will reduce travel bottlenecks and boost economic activity, tourism, and trade for Oyo State and beyond. Analysts, however, emphasize that the facility must maintain compliance with aviation standards and avoid further downtimes.
