The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has refuted reports suggesting that it has joined any ongoing industrial action, insisting that its members are fully engaged in academic and administrative duties across universities in Nigeria, Eko Hot Blog reports.
In a statement issued on Sunday, October 12, 2025, by its National President, Comrade Niyi Sunmonu, the union described the circulating reports as “misinformation” aimed at causing unnecessary confusion within the academic community.

“CONUA has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,” the statement read.
“We remain committed to academic stability, excellence, and the smooth functioning of Nigeria’s universities through dialogue and peaceful engagement.”
Dr. Sunmonu reaffirmed that the union believes in constructive engagement rather than disruption, urging members to continue their duties diligently and uphold professionalism in teaching, research, and service delivery.

The union explained that it had no basis to embark on any strike at this time. It recalled that when the 2009 Agreement Renegotiation Committee was inaugurated in October 2024, CONUA was excluded.
Following protests and a meeting with the Minister of Education on September 11, 2025, the government assured the union that the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee would be expanded to include all academic unions.
According to CONUA, the Ministry of Education has since fulfilled that promise by expanding the committee, eliminating any grounds for dispute or industrial action.
After the meeting, the national leadership briefed its members across campuses, leading to congresses held between September 18 and 24, 2025, where members unanimously reaffirmed their decision to pursue engagement, not strikes.
The statement also appealed to Vice Chancellors to ensure the safety and protection of CONUA members as they perform their duties, while advising students to remain focused on their studies.
“Our unwavering focus is on building a sustainable, innovative, and productive academic environment that serves the interests of students, scholars, and the nation,” Dr. Sunmonu said.
He further expressed appreciation to stakeholders who continue to support constructive approaches to resolving challenges in Nigeria’s higher education system.
