The Federal Government has confirmed that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is currently ill.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that Edun would not be leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Onanuga stated that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, will instead lead the Nigerian delegation to the global event, which begins on Monday, October 13.
“Mr Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank, will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meeting in Washington D.C., which opens on Monday, October 13. Cardoso, as the alternate governor, replaces the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, who is indisposed,” the statement read.
He added that the Nigerian delegation will also include the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite.
According to Onanuga, the World Bank’s schedule indicates that key events of the annual meetings will include the Development Committee Plenary on October 16 and the International Monetary and Financial Committee session on October 17. Other activities will cover regional briefings, press conferences, and discussions focused on international development, the global economy, and financial markets.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that Edun has been battling a health challenge for several weeks and may be flown abroad for further medical attention.
The finance minister’s absence comes at a crucial time, as Nigeria’s economic team continues to push for reforms aimed at stabilising the naira, curbing inflation, and improving investor confidence.
