EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Comrade General, former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, the group described Kyari’s continued detention as a “grave injustice,” particularly in light of recent presidential pardons granted to several convicted individuals, some of whom were reportedly arrested by Kyari’s team.
“The Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN) observes with deep concern the continued detention and prosecution of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari despite recent presidential pardons extended to convicted drug traffickers, fraudsters, kidnappers, and bandits—many of whom were arrested by his team in the line of duty,” Dalung stated.
Kyari and six others were arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in March 2022 for allegedly conspiring to tamper with and traffic 21.35 kilograms of cocaine seized from suspected drug traffickers.
Last week, President Bola Tinubu approved presidential pardons for 175 persons, including late nationalist Herbert Macaulay, late Major General Mamman Vatsa, and Maryam Sanda, who was convicted of murdering her husband. The pardons followed recommendations from the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).
MEN condemned what it termed the “selective application of clemency,” arguing that it undermines fairness and justice. “The recent wave of presidential amnesties and pardons has effectively emptied the moral and legal basis for Kyari’s continued detention,” the group said, warning that such inconsistency sets a dangerous precedent for public officers committed to national security.
The group urged President Tinubu and the Attorney-General to discontinue all charges and ensure Kyari’s immediate release, describing his continued trial as “a travesty of justice and institutional betrayal.”

Kyari, once celebrated as Nigeria’s “super cop” for his role in major criminal arrests, was arrested on February 14, 2022, after being declared wanted by the NDLEA. He has since pleaded not guilty to all charges.
