US President Donald Trump said he made “great progress” during a Thursday phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the two leaders agreed to hold face-to-face talks soon in Hungary.
Eko Hot Blog reports that following a “very productive” call, as described by Trump, and an “extremely frank and trustful” one, according to the Kremlin, both sides confirmed immediate preparations for a summit, starting with a meeting of US and Russian delegations next week.

The talks took place a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House. Trump is still deciding whether to supply Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles capable of striking deep inside Russia.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said he and Putin discussed post-war trade relations between the two nations. He noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would lead the US delegation in next week’s talks.
Trump also said he would brief Zelensky on the outcome of the call and hoped to meet Putin “within two weeks.” He hinted at hesitation over providing Ukraine with missiles, saying the US “can’t deplete” its own stockpile.

Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, Olga Stefanishyna, criticised Moscow for launching fresh attacks on Ukraine hours before the call. She said the strikes revealed “Russia’s true attitude toward peace” and urged stronger sanctions and air defence support.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban welcomed the planned meeting, calling it “great news for peace-loving people.” Trump’s position on the war has recently hardened as he pushes for negotiations to end Russia’s invasion, which began in 2022.
