- DHQ Denies Coup Plot, Says Independence Day Cancellation Misinterpreted
- The decision to cancel the Independence anniversary parade was based on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s engagement in a strategic bilateral meeting abroad
- Brigadier General Gusau further appealed to citizens to continue supporting the security agencies
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as false a report by an online publication alleging that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an attempted military coup.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said the publication was “malicious and intended to cause unnecessary tension and distrust among Nigerians.”

According to the DHQ, the decision to cancel the Independence anniversary parade was based on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s engagement in a strategic bilateral meeting abroad, as well as the need for the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to sustain ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
The military also addressed claims linking the parade cancellation to the recent arrest of sixteen officers, clarifying that the investigation is a routine internal disciplinary process.

“An investigative panel has been duly constituted, and its findings will be made public,” the statement said.
Reaffirming its loyalty to the Constitution and the Federal Government, the DHQ urged Nigerians to disregard what it described as “falsehoods being circulated by enemies of the nation.”
Brigadier General Gusau further appealed to citizens to continue supporting the security agencies, noting that the Federal Government, legislature, and judiciary remain united in their commitment to the nation’s safety, stability, and progress.
“Democracy is forever,” the statement concluded.
