EKO HOT BLOG reports that speaking to journalists on Sunday, Fayose accused the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, of destroying the party. He threw his weight behind the faction led by Mohammed Abdulrahman, the PDP National Vice Chairman (North Central), who was recently named Acting National Chairman by a rival group.
According to Fayose, most PDP leaders have defected to other parties, leaving no one to rebuild the crumbling opposition.
“The PDP has reasonably gone into extinction. The Damagum-led NWC are undertakers who have come to bury the party,” Fayose said. “Even as they prepare to leave in a few weeks, they are still suspending members. Abdulrahman represents a new beginning, and I believe he can rescue the party.”
Fayose insisted that Damagum would not return to office, alleging that he manipulated the system to become chairman. “Damagum was never meant to be chairman. Like Iyorchia Ayu, he will go the same way. He lacks competence and has caused confusion everywhere,” he added.
The former governor urged Abdulrahman to stabilise the party, conduct fresh congresses in state chapters, and restore unity ahead of the next national convention.
Fayose’s remarks come amid renewed internal crisis following a court order halting the PDP’s planned convention in Ibadan. The ruling, secured by three party officials, cited constitutional breaches in the convention’s preparation.
In response, both factions of the PDP have suspended key members of the National Working Committee, deepening the leadership struggle within the opposition party.
