Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has stated that his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was made in the overall interest of the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the governor spoke on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day at the Ecumenical Centre, Igbogene, Yenagoa — his first public statement since officially resigning from the PDP on October 15, 2025.

Diri explained that while many may not immediately understand his reasons for switching parties, time would reveal that his decision was driven by selflessness and a desire for Bayelsa’s progress.

“Somebody had to make the decision, and I took it on behalf of the state,” he said. “It was in the best interest of Bayelsa. Some may not understand now, but later it will be clear to all.”
The governor emphasized that politics should serve as a platform for development and unity rather than division, noting that his administration remains committed to peace, security, and ongoing infrastructural projects.
“When we came in as a government, we ensured that uncompleted projects were finished, and we initiated new ones. That alone is a reason to thank God,” he said. “Politics is for development, not to destroy one another. This gathering is a testimony of the unity in our state.”
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, praised Diri’s leadership, describing him as a blessing to Bayelsa for his visible developmental efforts.

Similarly, the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, commended Diri’s decision to join the ruling APC, calling it timely and beneficial.
He noted that Bayelsa could not afford to remain in opposition when critical national development policies were being formulated at the federal level.
“Governor Diri is a unifier, and his move is the right step forward,” Lokpobiri said. “This is the time for Bayelsa to align with the centre for greater progress.”
