The maiden edition of the Ojelabi Cup Football Competition in the Badagry Division officially kicked off on Saturday at the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) Football Pitch, drawing community leaders, political stakeholders and football enthusiasts to a colourful opening ceremony.
Eko Hot Blog reports that declaring the competition open, the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and host of the tournament, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi, charged participating youths to uphold discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the event.

He said the initiative was designed to strengthen community ties and elevate grassroots football.
According to Ojelabi, the Ojelabi Cup aims to promote unity, discover young talents and create opportunities for aspiring footballers across the Badagry Division.
He commended the Members of the Organising Committee (MOC), the Local Organising Committee (LOC), sub-committees, sponsors and volunteers for their dedication in ensuring a smooth start to the competition.
He also extended special appreciation to political leaders in the division, especially the Council Chairmen, describing them as dependable partners in advancing youth and sports development.

Ojelabi acknowledged the presence of His Royal Majesty, Oba Oloto of Otto, who graced the opening alongside other traditional rulers, councillors and party chieftains, saying their attendance demonstrated a shared commitment to peace and unity.
The APC chairman recognised Hon. Surajudeen Olatunji Tijani (Emir), representing Ojo Constituency II, for his consistent support for youth-driven initiatives.
He described Emir as a strong pillar in community mobilisation and sports promotion. He also praised Hon. Ege Olusegun Adebisi of Ojo Constituency I for his strategic involvement, noting that his efforts reflect a collective resolve to create opportunities for young athletes.
Ojelabi further applauded Mr. Deji Williams, Chairman of the LOC, for his outstanding leadership and coordination.
He noted that Williams played a pivotal role in logistics, technical readiness and community engagement leading up to the competition.
In his remarks, Williams expressed gratitude to the organisers, community leaders and sponsors for their confidence in the vision of the tournament.
He assured that the LOC remained committed to transparency, professionalism and delivering a credible and entertaining competition, saying all matches would be handled fairly.
The opening match set an exciting tone as Ilogbo Elegba defeated Asejere FC 2–1. Asejere FC took the lead in the 6th minute through jersey number 6, Chetta Ogbodo, before Ilogbo’s jersey number 17, Nonso Stephen, equalised in the 48th minute.
The winning goal came in the 80th minute when jersey number 8, Abu Aweda, completed the comeback.
Ojelabi expressed optimism about the impact of the competition, noting that it would give young players valuable exposure and memorable experiences. Declaring the event open, he wished all teams success, adding, “May the best team win.”
