The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, does not require his approval to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing however that such a move does not automatically secure victory in the 2027 elections.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Wike made the remark on Monday during his monthly media engagement at his country residence in Port Harcourt, where he addressed questions surrounding recent political realignments in Rivers State.

Reacting to Fubara’s reported switch to the ruling party, Wike described the decision as expected, citing earlier defections by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and several local government chairmen.

He noted that political affiliation remains a personal choice, adding that party loyalty alone does not guarantee electoral tickets or success.
According to the former Rivers governor, many politicians wrongly assume that aligning with a powerful platform automatically earns them re-election tickets, insisting that candidates must still work to gain acceptance from the electorate.
Wike further pointed out that several governors who once accused him of secretly backing President Bola Tinubu and the APC have themselves defected to the ruling party, describing the situation as ironic but unsurprising.
