EKO HOT BLOG reports that the National Secretary of the APC, Ajibola Basiru, confirmed that the party stands firmly behind Fubara’s administration and his second term ambition. Speaking to Sunday Punch, Basiru said, “Nobody can frustrate any APC governor. Fubara, like other APC governors, is running the affairs of his state well.”
Fubara formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC on December 9, 2025, a move widely viewed as strategic ahead of the 2027 governorship election. His defection was followed by the movement of 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to the APC, consolidating his influence within the party.
The APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, also described Fubara as the leader of the party in Rivers State, while urging internal coordination. “Governor Fubara is the leader of the APC in Rivers State, but he would need to coordinate with every other person in the state,” Yilwatda said on Channels Television.
However, Wike has continued to question Fubara’s position within the party. At a media briefing, the FCT minister said, “Fubara’s defection to the APC does not make him the party leader in Rivers. I remain the political leader of the state.”
Responding indirectly during a public event aired on Arise TV, Fubara accused unnamed political actors of blackmail. He said, “The only reason the dog barks is when it doesn’t understand. We know where we are going.”
An APC national officer told Sunday Punch that Wike lacked the authority to determine Fubara’s political future, stressing that party rules favour sitting governors seeking re election.
Basiru further cautioned party leaders against disparaging remarks about elected governors, describing such conduct as unacceptable and damaging to party unity.
Other APC officials, including Duru Eze and Bala Ibrahim, affirmed that Fubara enjoys the backing of President Bola Tinubu, the National Working Committee and the party’s leadership structures nationwide.
