EKO HOT BLOG reports that the duo are under serious consideration following recent developments at Old Trafford. There is also growing belief within the club that a shared arrangement may not be ruled out, given Carrick’s key role on Solskjaer’s coaching staff when he replaced Jose Mourinho in 2018.
Darren Fletcher, who is currently overseeing the club’s Under 18 side, has also been consulted. However, he is expected to remain in interim charge only until a caretaker appointment is confirmed. Fletcher will take charge of the senior team for Wednesday night’s Premier League fixture away to Burnley, scheduled for 20:15 GMT.
Former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is also believed to be among the names discussed internally.
The vacancy followed the dismissal of Amorim on Monday, bringing an unsettled fourteen month period to an end. Club officials are understood to be planning a permanent appointment in the summer, rather than rushing into a long term decision.
A dressing room source told the BBC that some players believe the role could be split between more than one candidate. There is also a view that Fletcher could remain in charge until the end of the campaign if results in the next two matches are positive.
Solskjaer previously stepped into the role in similar circumstances in 2018 after Mourinho’s departure. Initially appointed on a temporary basis, he later secured the job permanently and remained in charge for three years before leaving in November 2021.
Carrick briefly managed the team for three matches after Solskjaer’s exit before departing the club a month later. He has been out of work since his dismissal by Middlesbrough last June.

Looking ahead, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, now with Marseille, are being monitored as possible long term options. Glasner declined to comment on the speculation during his press conference on Tuesday.
