Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, has claimed that Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, attempted to secure his backing through ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo shortly after the APC presidential primary.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Bwala made the allegation while speaking on The Clarity Zone podcast, where he was reacting to comments attributed to Obi in which the former Anambra State governor reportedly referred to him as a “character.”

Bwala said he was not offended by the remark and instead argued that the description more fittingly applied to Obi himself.
According to Bwala, Obi’s political style relied heavily on what he described as drama rather than substance, claiming the former governor promoted an appealing narrative that lacked practical grounding.

He alleged that this approach raised unrealistic expectations among supporters, many of whom, he said, struggled to accept the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.
Bwala further accused some Obi loyalists of reacting aggressively online after the polls, alleging that critics were targeted across social media platforms in what he described as coordinated attacks. He insisted, however, that his own criticisms were issue-based and not driven by personal animosity.
The presidential aide also revisited his long-standing critique of Obi’s record as Anambra State governor, alleging that an excessive focus on savings came at the expense of infrastructure and public services.
He cited industrial actions by medical professionals during Obi’s tenure and questioned the decision to lodge state funds in a bank where Obi allegedly had leadership influence.

Bwala further claimed that Obi avoided clarifying his exact role in the financial institution or addressing questions about possible personal benefits from state deposits. He maintained that such issues deserved transparent answers rather than emotional responses.
Responding to claims that he lacked firsthand knowledge of Anambra State, Bwala dismissed the assertion, stating that he was familiar with several communities in the state and could easily identify key locations linked to Obi.
On the alleged outreach through Obasanjo, Bwala said the contact occurred while he was outside Nigeria, adding that the former president personally called him during a meeting with Obi and his running mate. He stressed that the account was verifiable and involved identifiable individuals, not speculation.
Bwala concluded by saying he remained unfazed by labels or personal attacks, insisting that the questions he raised about Obi’s political history and governance record should be addressed directly rather than deflected.
