Seun Kuti has strongly criticised attempts by fans to liken Afrobeats star Wizkid to his late father, legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, describing such comparisons as disrespectful and misplaced.
Speaking during a recent Instagram livestream, Eko Hot Blog reports that the outspoken musician warned members of Wizkid’s fan base, popularly known as Wizkid FC, to stop invoking Fela’s name in debates about contemporary music stars.

According to him, placing any modern-day artist on the same pedestal as Fela diminishes the historical and cultural weight of the Afrobeat icon’s legacy.

Seun argued that Fela’s impact went far beyond music, stressing that his father’s work was rooted in activism, resistance, and spiritual depth, which cannot be casually equated with present-day commercial success.
He insisted that comparing Wizkid or any artist of the current generation to Fela ignores the distinct era, purpose, and sacrifices that defined Afrobeat’s originator.
The singer also accused some fans of acting out of ignorance rather than conscious defiance, noting that constant online comparisons have fuelled unnecessary rivalries within the music industry.

He lamented that such fan-driven conflicts have strained collaborations among artists and contributed to a toxic culture around Nigerian music.
Seun further stated that genuine appreciation of music should not require constant comparisons, adding that if listeners were truly fulfilled by an artist’s sound, they would not feel compelled to measure it against another legend.
He urged fans to focus on enjoying their favourite musicians for who they are, without dragging Fela’s name into what he described as “petty arguments.”
