The Airport Police Command has arrested a Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) driver, Adewale Abiodun, following a fatal accident involving a 19-year-old female pedestrian at Ikeja Bus Stop, Lagos, Eko Hot Blog reports.
According to a statement on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Airport Command, Mohammed Adeola, the incident occurred last Friday when the victim had just alighted from a bus and was walking towards the airport.

The driver, operating an Ashok Leyland LAMATA bus with registration number MUS 139 YL, struck the pedestrian and fled the scene. Despite attempts by passers-by to assist her, the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the Air Force Base Hospital, Ikeja, due to severe injuries.
Upon receiving the report, the Airport Police Command quickly proceeded to the hospital and launched an investigation. A coordinated manhunt for the fleeing driver ensued, with LAMATA collaborating to track and establish accountability.

“As a result of this collaboration, the driver was identified, located, and brought to the Domestic Police Division, Airport Command, by LAMATA officials,” the statement said.
The suspect, Adewale Abiodun, is currently in police custody and has made a statement regarding the incident, as investigations continue.
Commenting on the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Dr Olufunke Ogunbode, described the accident as a grave loss of life and vowed that justice would be served. She emphasised that acts of negligence and reckless driving would not be tolerated, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
Ogunbode also urged motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to traffic regulations, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility. The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court following the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
