The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has hailed the late Imam Abdullahi Abdullahi as a courageous and selfless figure whose actions during a deadly 2018 attack saved over 200 Christian lives.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that in a statement on Saturday, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh described Imam Abdullahi’s intervention as a profound act of moral bravery, saying it transcended religious divisions and affirmed the sanctity of human life.

“By risking his own safety to protect innocent people, the late Imam Abdullahi Abdullahi stood on the side of humanity when it mattered most. His courage and compassion will be remembered for generations,” Okoh said.

The Imam, who passed away at 92, also received tributes from President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, all acknowledging him as a hero whose legacy strengthens interfaith harmony.
CAN noted that the Imam’s decisive actions not only saved lives but also fostered hope and unity in a country often divided by religious and ethnic tensions. In 2021, he was honoured by CAN during its Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in recognition of his extraordinary service to humanity.

“His legacy goes beyond awards and ceremonies. It is a lasting example of what true faith, conscience, and love for humanity can achieve,” the statement added.
The association called for continued recognition of Imam Abdullahi’s sacrifice and urged engagement with his family to ensure his story inspires unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.
“As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life devoted to God and humanity,” CAN said, extending condolences to the Imam’s family, community, and all who were touched by his remarkable example.
