The late Imam Abdullahi Abubakar gained national and international recognition in 2018 when he courageously sheltered over 200 Christians during the communal strife that engulfed Plateau State. His selfless actions prevented further bloodshed and highlighted the potential for humanity to prevail over division.
In a statement, President Tinubu described Imam Abubakar as an extraordinary religious leader whose life reflected faith, courage, and a steadfast belief in the sanctity of human life. “At a time when tribal and religious tendencies seemed to overwhelm reason, Imam Abubakar stood firmly on the side of peace, benevolence, and conscience,” the President said.
He added, “Mindful of the enormous risk to his own life, the noble cleric chose humanity over division, love over hatred, and embrace rather than rejection. His heroic feat underlines the essence of true faith, resonating louder than sermons in a salient message to the world. Imam Abubakar is a worthy example of the better humanity we should all aspire to.”

The President noted that the late Imam’s bravery did not go unnoticed, as he received both local and international honors recognizing his commitment to coexistence among people of diverse faiths and backgrounds. Tinubu called on religious and community leaders to emulate Imam Abubakar’s spirit of tolerance, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.
“May the Almighty grant Imam Abubakar eternal rest and reward him for his good deeds and courage,” the President concluded.
