The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued a Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) operative who was knocked down by a speeding container truck along Offin Canal, inward Eko Bridge.

According to Giwa, the heavily loaded container truck struck the LAWMA operative, identified as Mr Baba Ibeji, while he was carrying out his official refuse evacuation duties.
Preliminary findings revealed that the articulated truck, which was reportedly speeding, suffered a brake failure while descending the CMS Bridge linking Offin Canal to Eko Bridge.
The mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control, leading the truck to run over the LAWMA worker before crashing into and crushing a Toyota Camry with registration number FST 417 FS.
LASTMA officials who were on routine traffic surveillance in the area swiftly responded and managed to rescue the severely injured LAWMA operative from beneath the wreckage.

The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby Fuja Hospital but was turned away due to the severity of his injuries. He was later referred and taken to the General Hospital for urgent and specialised medical treatment.
In a condemnable turn of events, the truck driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash. However, LASTMA operatives arrested the truck’s assistant (motor boy), who was handed over to officers of the Ebute-Ero Police Division on Lagos Island for further investigation.
Giwa condemned the reckless driving that led to the accident and directed relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation. He added that the outcome of the probe would determine possible prosecution in line with existing laws.
