The secretariat, located in the Utako District of the Federal Capital Territory, had previously been occupied by the faction led by Julius Abure.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has now updated its records to recognise Usman and her team, paving the way for the transition.
The shift comes on the heels of a Federal High Court ruling delivered on January 21, 2026, which directed INEC to acknowledge the caretaker committee headed by Usman.
The court held that Abure’s tenure as national chairman had elapsed, thereby validating the interim leadership arrangement.
Following the judgment, INEC officially listed Senator Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Interim National Secretary of the party.

The Usman-led caretaker committee has been mandated to restore stability within the Labour Party and oversee the organisation of a national convention that will usher in a substantive leadership.
Despite the court ruling and INEC’s recognition, the Abure faction has maintained its stance, insisting that it remains the legitimate leadership of the party and has indicated plans to challenge the judgment at the appellate court.
Meanwhile, preparations appear to be underway at the party secretariat, with banners bearing the images of Usman and Nwokocha being mounted around the premises, signalling the start of a new phase in the party’s leadership.
