The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reminded parents and guardians that obtaining a National Identification Number (NIN) for their children is compulsory, particularly ahead of the 2026 Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations.
In a public notice shared on its official X page on Friday, the commission stressed that the NIN has become essential for students, noting that it is now required not only for examination registration but also for school admissions, scholarship applications and access to other government services, Eko Hot Blog gathered.

NIMC described the identification number as a vital requirement for academic and official processes, urging parents to act promptly to avoid last-minute difficulties.

To make enrollment easier, the commission said it has expanded registration access through its Ward Enrollment Strategy, which brings services closer to local communities.
The initiative is designed to help families complete the process in good time before examination deadlines.
Parents were advised to locate the nearest enrollment centre through the commission’s official website or by calling its toll-free support line.
As part of its broader identity management drive, NIMC said it is working to ensure that every Nigerian child is captured in the national database, providing them with a secure and verifiable identity record.

Under the 2026 enrollment guidelines, children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who already has a valid NIN.
Parents are also required to present original birth certificates or official declarations of age during registration.
The commission emphasised that enrollment at authorised centres is free and cautioned the public against dealing with unauthorised individuals or paying illegal fees.
