The Federal Government has commissioned an integrated Compressed Natural Gas refuelling station at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, Osun State, marking another step in its push to expand domestic gas use and promote cleaner energy alternatives, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking during the inauguration, Oluwole Adama, Executive Director of the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, described the project as a strategic milestone in Nigeria’s energy transition journey.

According to him, the facility is more than a refuelling outlet, noting that it represents collaboration and a deliberate commitment to strengthening the country’s gas powered transport system.
“This project represents more than the commissioning of a refuelling station. It symbolizes progress, partnership, and purpose in advancing Nigeria’s energy transition, promoting cleaner fuels, and deepening domestic gas utilization in line with national energy objectives,” Adama said.
He explained that expanding CNG infrastructure remains central to the Federal Government’s broader plan to reduce reliance on conventional fuels, lower transportation costs, and cut emissions.

The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a development that will benefit both the university community and residents of neighbouring areas.
Bamire noted that beyond easing access to cleaner fuel, the facility would also open up research and practical learning opportunities for students, particularly in engineering and energy related disciplines.
He added that the presence of the CNG station on campus aligns with the institution’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development.
It was gathered that the project is part of a wider federal government backed programme aimed at scaling up gas infrastructure nationwide, supporting cleaner transportation options, and accelerating Nigeria’s transition to more sustainable energy sources.
