The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has urged media organisations to exercise diligence and ensure contextual accuracy in their reports on waste management operations across Lagos State.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made the call on Friday while responding to recent media reports concerning waste evacuation challenges in parts of the state.

Gbadegesin explained that routine household waste collection in Lagos is carried out by licensed Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators under strict regulatory supervision and performance monitoring by LAWMA.
He noted that contrary to some reports, the agency is not directly responsible for collecting municipal solid waste from households.
“LAWMA enforces defined service benchmarks and maintenance standards while activating targeted interventions wherever performance gaps are identified. I urge residents to report service gaps whenever they observe them,” he said.

The LAWMA boss further clarified that compactor trucks used for residential waste evacuation are owned and operated by PSP operators, adding that LAWMA inscriptions on the vehicles are meant only for regulatory identification and do not indicate institutional ownership.
Gbadegesin also stated that all designated landfill sites across the state remain operational and accessible to licensed waste operators for proper disposal.
According to him, waste management in Lagos; a megacity with a population exceeding 22 million must be viewed within the context of ongoing reforms aimed at improving efficiency in the sector.
He highlighted initiatives such as the optimisation of Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) to enhance fleet turnaround time and the expansion of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to support recycling and resource recovery.
The reforms, he said, are part of the state government’s efforts to transition toward a circular economy and reduce reliance on landfill disposal.
Gbadegesin, however, called for stronger collaboration between government and residents to maintain a cleaner environment.
He warned that indiscriminate waste dumping and the patronage of illegal cart pushers undermine structured waste management operations in the state.
The LAWMA chief added that ongoing reforms in infrastructure, enforcement and logistics modernisation are designed to deliver a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Lagos.
