President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the occasion of his 89th birthday, describing the elder statesman as a towering figure whose influence continues to shape Nigeria, Africa, and the global community.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President rejoiced with the former leader and commended his decades of service and commitment to national development.

Tinubu noted that Obasanjo has played significant roles at critical moments in Nigeria’s history, adding that his contributions to the country’s political evolution and Africa’s progress remain remarkable.
The President recalled Obasanjo’s time as Nigeria’s military Head of State between 1976 and 1979, when he oversaw the transition to civil rule and handed over power to a democratically elected government in 1979.
He also acknowledged Obasanjo’s return to power in the Fourth Republic as a civilian president, serving two terms from 1999 to 2007.

According to Tinubu, the former president’s life reflects courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and development.
He further noted that Obasanjo played an important role during the Nigerian civil war and later endured imprisonment for speaking out against military rule.
The President also praised the former leader’s continued engagement in national and continental affairs, noting that he has remained a strong voice for political and economic development across Africa.
Tinubu highlighted Obasanjo’s intellectual contributions through his books and regular public interventions, which he said reflect deep patriotism and dedication to nation-building.
As the elder statesman marks his 89th birthday, the President prayed for continued good health, strength, and wisdom for him to keep contributing to Nigeria and the wider world.
