The Federal High Court of Nigeria sitting in Abuja on Monday fixed May 18 for the commencement of trial of a man, Innocent Chukwuma, accused of calling on the military to overthrow the government of Bola Tinubu through a social media post.
The trial judge, Joyce Abdulmalik, adjourned the case after the prosecution requested more time to study the case file.
At the resumed hearing, prosecuting counsel David Kaswe told the court that he had only recently been assigned to the matter.
Kaswe explained that the case file had just been transferred to his office by the Department of State Services.
He therefore asked the court for an adjournment to enable him review the documents before proceeding with the trial.
Following the request, the court adjourned the case until May 18 and May 19 for trial. Chukwuma was earlier arraigned before the court over an alleged inciting post made on social media. Operatives of the Department of State Services reportedly traced and arrested him in Oyigbo, Port Harcourt.
The charge, marked FHC ABJ CR 610 2025, is titled Federal Republic of Nigeria vs Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume. According to the charge, the defendant used his handle “@TheAgroman” on the social media platform X to call for a military takeover in Nigeria.
In one of the posts cited in court, Chukwuma allegedly wrote, “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government, and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
