According to the Vice Chairman of Epe Local Government, Hon. Sikiru Owolomose, more than ₦240 million has already been spent by Ikeja Electric on upgrading power infrastructure in the area. However, repeated vandalism of power facilities continues to undermine these efforts.
“Following the most recent vandalism and after several high-level discussions, Ikeja Electric has committed to restoring electricity within one week, provided the local governments fully protect the facilities,” he explained.
The blackout has forced many households and businesses to rely on fuel-powered generators, an option that has become increasingly expensive due to the recent surge in fuel prices.
Many small-scale entrepreneurs who depend on electricity to power cold rooms, lighting for shops, or small machinery report that operational costs have doubled or tripled.
Products that were already expensive during previous blackouts have become even costlier, further straining families and reducing consumer purchasing power.
Transportation has also been heavily affected. With fuel prices soaring, the cost of motorcycles, tricycles, and taxis has risen sharply.
Many residents now have no choice but to walk long distances to reach markets, schools, and workplaces, slowing productivity and creating additional physical strain.
To mitigate the problem, the three local governments within Epe Division have pledged 24-hour security to protect the power infrastructure. Motorcycles and security vehicles have been deployed, and a ₦5 million monthly fund has been dedicated to maintain this arrangement.
Hon. Owolomose noted that Epe Local Government is fully ready to meet its obligations and is urging full cooperation from Eredo and Ikosi-Ejinrin Local Council Development Areas to ensure seamless restoration of electricity.
The combined effect of unreliable electricity and rising fuel prices highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Stable power supply is critical not only to reduce reliance on costly generators but also to stabilize product prices, ease transportation burdens, and support local businesses, ultimately improving the quality of life for all residents of Epe Division.
