An eyewitness, Abdulrashid Yusuf, said the girl had been sent to a nearby shop to buy items for iftar when the accident happened.
According to him, residents in the area usually cross the drainage under construction using a temporary wooden plank because there is no proper pedestrian bridge at the site.
He explained that the child lost her balance while attempting to cross close to the construction area and fell onto an exposed iron rod used in the drainage structure.
The iron rod, which was not covered, reportedly penetrated the girl’s stomach, leading to her death at the scene before she could be taken to hospital.

Residents blamed the tragedy on poor safety measures at the construction site, noting that uncovered iron rods and open drainage edges pose serious risks to pedestrians, especially children.
The incident occurred just days after another accident in the state involving a teenager. On Friday, a 15 year old boy identified as Ibrahim Umar reportedly fell into a drainage along Badawa Road shortly after Juma’at prayers.
The teenager sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment.
Following the latest tragedy, residents have urged authorities and contractors handling road and drainage projects in Kano State to improve safety measures at construction sites.
They also called for exposed iron rods to be properly covered and safe pedestrian crossings provided to prevent similar incidents in the future.
