The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the reported death of a woman popularly known as “Elena,” who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure at a clinic in the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the probe is being carried out by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), the regulatory body responsible for monitoring and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos.

The investigation follows reports circulating on social media claiming that the woman experienced complications during or shortly after the cosmetic surgery.
Confirming the development on Thursday, HEFAMAA Permanent Secretary Abiola Idowu said the agency had commenced a comprehensive review of the incident to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
According to Idowu, preliminary checks indicate that the clinic where the procedure reportedly took place is registered with the regulatory agency. However, she emphasised that such registration does not exempt any facility from strict regulatory scrutiny, especially when patient safety concerns arise.
“As the statutory regulatory body responsible for monitoring, licensing and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures that all facilities comply with established operational standards, professional guidelines and patient safety protocols,” she said.
Idowu explained that aesthetic and cosmetic procedures carried out in the state are regulated under specific standards covering facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection prevention measures, patient consent, anaesthetic safety and emergency response readiness.

She added that the agency is currently reviewing all aspects of the case, including verifying the medical credentials of the personnel involved and evaluating the level of care provided before, during and after the surgery.
The Permanent Secretary reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting public health through strict oversight of medical facilities and enforcement of regulatory standards.
She also urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could undermine the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
