The Lagos State Government has announced Monday, April 6, 2026, as the date for this year’s Fanti Carnival, set to take place at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the announcement was made by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, during a press briefing held at Amah Studio, Eleganza House, Lagos Island.

Describing the carnival as more than just a celebration, Benson-Awoyinka said it represents a living story of identity, resilience, and community. According to her, the event brings history to life through colourful costumes, vibrant music, energetic dances, and theatrical performances that connect generations.
She noted that Lagos, known for its rich cultural diversity, finds a strong expression of its heritage in the Fanti Carnival, which celebrates the legacy of Afro-Brazilian returnees and the enduring cultural ties between the city and the wider Atlantic world.
The commissioner added that the historic Tafawa Balewa Square would once again be transformed into a lively cultural hub, attracting residents, tourists, and culture enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.

She emphasised that the state government remains committed to using cultural tourism as a tool for economic growth, social unity, and global visibility, noting that events like the carnival help boost local businesses, empower creatives, and reinforce Lagos’ reputation as a leading destination for arts and culture in Africa.
Also speaking, the General Secretary of the Nigerian-Brazilian Descendants Association, Remi Dacosta, said the carnival holds deep historical significance and provides a platform to showcase their rich cultural heritage to the world.
