The European Union has signalled a renewed push to strengthen its partnership with Nigeria, with a focus on security, trade, and strategic economic sectors, Eko Hot Blog reports.
This followed a high-level meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, at the president’s residence in Lagos.

Speaking after the meeting, Kallas described Nigeria and the EU as “like-minded partners,” noting that both sides explored fresh opportunities to deepen cooperation across key areas, including security, investment, and critical raw materials.
“We are very like-minded partners, the European Union and Nigeria, and today we explored new ways to collaborate across key sectors,” she said.
She stressed that the current global climate, marked by rising geopolitical tensions, makes stronger alliances between countries that support a rules-based international order more important than ever.
“The global security situation is very serious, and countries that value the international rules-based system must continue to work together,” Kallas added.
According to her, discussions also covered expanding cooperation in cybersecurity and broader security frameworks to address emerging threats.
“We are looking at enhanced cooperation in security and cybersecurity, where we believe there is significant potential for stronger collaboration,” she said.
On the economic front, Kallas pointed to opportunities for increased trade and investment, particularly in sectors that can drive sustainable growth. She also highlighted critical raw materials as an area of shared strategic interest.

President Tinubu, in his remarks, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to building stronger ties with the EU, expressing appreciation for its continued support in development, security, and economic cooperation.
He emphasised that Nigeria remains open to partnerships that promote stability, shared prosperity, and long-term growth.
The meeting was also attended by Nuhu Ribadu and Abubakar Bagudu, underscoring the strategic importance of the engagement.
