Kwara State Government has commenced the mobilisation of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) to supervise the rehabilitation of public secondary schools across the state, as part of plans to upgrade about 898 institutions under the World Bank-supported Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the development was disclosed during a stakeholders’ sensitisation meeting held in Ilorin on Tuesday, where officials outlined the implementation framework for the upcoming infrastructure improvements.

The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, said the initiative is in line with the education reform agenda of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

He noted that the programme demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving learning conditions and increasing access to quality education throughout the state.
According to him, Technical Service Providers have already been assigned to collaborate with SBMCs in 111 pilot schools, with half of the contract funds released to begin renovation work.
He added that 56.7 per cent of the selected schools fall within the small grant category, while 43.2 per cent are classified under medium grants.
The first phase of the project will cover 24 schools in Asa Local Government Area, 25 in Ilorin West, 10 in Offa, 16 in Oyun, and 18 schools each in Ilorin East and Ilorin South.

Olohungbebe explained that this initial phase would serve as a model for the wider implementation across other public secondary schools in the state, assuring that additional schools would benefit in subsequent stages.
The AGILE Project, supported by the World Bank and development partners, is a key component of the state’s efforts to strengthen educational infrastructure and improve learning outcomes, particularly for adolescent girls.
