Pope Leo has said he is unafraid of pressure from the Trump administration and will continue speaking against war, following a sharp public criticism from US President Donald Trump over his position on the Iran conflict.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, described the pontiff as “weak on crime and terrible for foreign policy,” and later told reporters he was “not a big fan” of the Pope, Eko Hot Blog gathered.

Speaking to journalists while travelling to Algeria, Pope Leo said he would not engage in a direct exchange with Trump, but reaffirmed his commitment to advocating peace and calling for an end to global conflicts.

The Pope has been vocal in opposing the Iran war, previously condemning Trump’s reported threats against Iran as “unacceptable” and urging diplomatic alternatives to de-escalate tensions.
Such direct exchanges between a pope and world leaders are uncommon, given the Vatican’s traditional diplomatic restraint.
Trump’s comments came as Pope Leo began an 11-day tour of Africa, one of his major international trips since becoming pontiff last year.
In his remarks, Trump also suggested the Pope’s election was influenced by his American nationality and claimed he would have handled global issues more effectively from the White House.

He further accused the pontiff of being lenient on crime and criticized his stance on nuclear-related tensions involving Iran.
Responding to questions on board his flight to Algiers, Pope Leo said his mission was spiritual rather than political, stressing that his focus remains on promoting peace and protecting human life.
He said he was not intimidated by political leaders, adding that his role is to deliver the message of the Gospel, not to engage in political disputes.
The Pope also expressed concern over widespread global suffering, insisting that world leaders must seek peaceful solutions rather than escalation.

Trump’s remarks have sparked reactions among Catholic commentators and observers, some of whom compared the public clash to historical tensions between the Vatican and authoritarian leaders.
Pope Leo has consistently used public appearances to call for restraint in international conflicts, including criticism of hardline positions on Iran and immigration policies he says undermine human dignity.
He is widely seen as continuing the humanitarian approach of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who also frequently clashed with Trump on issues of immigration and social policy.
