Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has announced his intention to run for president again in the 2027 general election.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that Sowore confirmed his ambition during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, noting that his party is already making preparations ahead of its primaries scheduled for next week.

When asked if he would be the AAC’s flagbearer in the upcoming election, he said the decision would be determined by the party, stressing that he would not assume automatic selection.
He also addressed ongoing issues surrounding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s digital registration requirements for political parties, stating that the AAC was still completing aspects of its submission process despite legal clarifications allowing parties to revisit their applications.

Sowore used the interview to restate his political position, arguing that Nigeria’s long-standing political leadership has failed to deliver meaningful progress in key sectors such as security and the economy.
He maintained that continued reliance on established political figures would only deepen the country’s challenges, insisting that Nigerians needed a shift toward leaders with fresh ideas and alternative approaches.
Responding to questions comparing him with prominent politicians such as President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde and Rotimi Amaechi, Sowore said the existing political class had not improved the lives of citizens.

He insisted that his candidacy is driven by a determination to win, not merely to participate, adding that Nigeria’s current situation requires urgent and different leadership direction.
Sowore, who previously contested the presidency in 2019 and 2023 under the AAC platform, reaffirmed his belief that political office should be earned through ideas and merit rather than entrenched political structures.
The 2027 general elections are expected to begin with presidential and National Assembly polls scheduled for January 16, followed by governorship and state assembly elections on February 6.
