Eko Hot Blog reports that the concerned party members, who spoke through a statement made available to journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, expressed worries over what they described as efforts by certain influential figures within the party to disregard the choice made by members during the APC primary election held on May 20.
According to the stakeholders, the primary election was conducted with the participation of party members at the grassroots, and the outcome reflected the collective will of delegates and party faithful within the constituency.
The group alleged that there were ongoing moves to substitute the preferred candidate that emerged from the exercise with another aspirant, a development they said could undermine confidence in the party’s democratic principles.
They specifically accused some party leaders of working behind the scenes to influence the final outcome of the process, contrary to the wishes of party members who participated in the election.
The stakeholders warned that any attempt to tamper with the outcome of the primary could create discontent among party faithful and negatively impact party unity ahead of future electoral contests.
“The decision reached by party members during the primary election should be respected. The foundation of democracy is the people’s right to choose their representatives, and that choice must not be compromised,” the statement read.
The group further appealed to the leadership of the APC in Lagos State, including the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), to intervene and ensure that transparency, fairness, and due process prevail.
According to them, preserving the credibility of the primary election process is essential to maintaining the trust and confidence of members across the constituency.
“The voice of our members must be respected, and the outcome of the primary election should stand. This is necessary for the unity, stability, and continued progress of our great party,” the stakeholders stated.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain an official response from those mentioned in the allegations were unsuccessful.
The development has continued to generate discussions among party members and political observers, with many emphasizing the importance of internal democracy in strengthening political institutions and promoting unity within the party.
