The Lagos State Government has commenced an intensified waste evacuation exercise following complaints from residents over the increasing accumulation of refuse in parts of the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the government said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had directed an immediate scale-up of sanitation operations to address the situation.

According to the statement, the governor acknowledged the concerns expressed by residents and assured Lagosians that efforts were already underway to restore cleanliness across affected communities.
Sanwo-Olu reportedly directed relevant agencies and service providers to work round the clock to evacuate accumulated waste, clear existing backlogs and return normal sanitation services to impacted areas.
The government disclosed that additional resources have been deployed to support the exercise, while new strategies are being introduced to improve the efficiency of waste collection and disposal.
The statement added that the governor specifically instructed the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and other agencies in the environmental sector to intensify their operations.

The state government noted that Lagos, as one of Africa’s fastest-growing megacities, generates approximately 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, making waste management a complex task that occasionally experiences operational challenges.
Despite the difficulties, the government maintained that it has the capacity to address the problem and assured residents that visible improvements have already been recorded in some parts of the state.
“We wish to reassure residents that this challenge is temporary. Indeed, substantial progress is already being recorded in several locations, and more improvements will become visible across the state in the days ahead,” the statement said.
The government also reiterated its commitment to environmental sustainability, noting that the Sanwo-Olu administration has continued to invest in waste management infrastructure and urban renewal initiatives aimed at making Lagos cleaner and safer.
Residents, market associations, business owners and community leaders were urged to support government efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding activities that obstruct drainage channels, roads and designated collection points.
The state government assured Lagosians that the refuse build-up would not be allowed to persist, stressing that measures being implemented are intended not only to clear the current backlog but also to strengthen the long-term resilience of the state’s waste management system.
“A cleaner Lagos is not merely an aspiration; it is a commitment we will continue to deliver,” the statement added.
