According to Folorunsho, personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO carried out the operation after receiving credible intelligence about boats allegedly involved in illegal mining activities within coastal communities in Brass Local Government Area.

He explained that naval operatives tracked and intercepted the boats at Lekeson and Liama communities, where they discovered large quantities of suspected illegally mined black sand onboard.
The operation resulted in the arrest of 13 crew members believed to be connected to the illegal activity.
Folorunsho noted that the successful interception highlights the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime environment and tackling activities that threaten the nation’s economy and ecological sustainability.

He stressed that the service would continue to intensify efforts against illegal resource extraction and other maritime crimes while ensuring security across the country’s waterways.
The naval spokesperson added that the seized boats, the recovered black sand, and the arrested suspects have been handed over to the Divisional Police Officer in Nembe for further investigation and possible prosecution.
He explained that the transfer was carried out in line with existing procedures and directives issued by the Bayelsa State Government.
Folorunsho reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s resolve to work closely with relevant security agencies and stakeholders to protect the country’s maritime resources and ensure that the waterways remain safe for lawful economic activities.
