- While the attack occurred in an area densely populated by Montreal’s Jewish community, law enforcement officials have discovered a lengthy manifesto linked to the suspect containing violent “incel” ideology, indicating the primary targets were police officers lured into an ambush.
The tranquil normalcy of Montreal’s populous Côte-des-Neiges borough was completely shattered on Monday morning when a heavily armed gunman launched a deadly assault, killing a police officer and a civilian before being neutralized by law enforcement.

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) formally identified the fallen law enforcement agent as 34-year-old Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane.
Having joined the municipal police force in 2021, Benredouane was described by Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher as a deeply passionate, dedicated, and exemplary officer whose tragic passing marks the first time an SPVM officer has been shot and killed in the line of duty since 2002.
A second female officer responding to the emergency call was critically wounded during the initial exchange of gunfire, though authorities have confirmed she has since been stabilized at a local trauma center.
The civilian victim was identified as Michael “Michel” Moshe Mizrahi, a beloved local resident and prominent member of Montreal’s Jewish community.
Because the shooting materialized near Westbury Avenue, an area saturated with kosher supermarkets, community centers, and restaurants, civil society groups like the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs initially monitored the situation under a high state of vigilance.
However, ongoing investigations by federal and provincial law enforcement sources have increasingly pointed toward a calculated ambush specifically targeting first responders rather than an act of sectarian terrorism.
Emergency services initially rushed to the scene around 11:30 a.m. following a series of frantic 911 calls from witnesses who reported seeing a long gun protruding from a residential window.
Upon arriving at the designated location, responding officers were instantly pinned down by a barrage of high-caliber gunfire coming from the suspect. Tactical units ultimately forced entry into the building, where the lone gunman was shot and killed.
Investigators at the scene successfully recovered the suspect’s long rifle along with a massive, 100-page written manifesto.

Law enforcement intelligence sources indicate the digital manuscript strongly espouses violent “incel” ideology, suggesting the suspect called 911 to deliberately lure police into a deadly kill zone.
Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette expressed profound grief over the tragic event, ordering the flags at the National Assembly to be lowered to half-mast as a sign of respect for the fallen officer.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also extended his condolences, commending the heroic dedication of the first responders who prevented further loss of life.
While the active threat has been completely neutralized and shelter-in-place orders lifted, forensic teams remain on site to piece together the exact timeline of the tragedy.
