- Waste Police initiative launched to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal and environmental violations.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has assured residents that significant measures are being implemented to improve waste evacuation and environmental sanitation across the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the assurance was given by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who stated that the agency was actively addressing operational challenges affecting waste collection in some communities while rolling out strategic interventions to strengthen service delivery.
According to him, the state government has adopted a combination of immediate and long-term solutions aimed at improving waste management operations and ensuring cleaner communities across Lagos.
Dr. Gbadegesin explained that some of the recent challenges experienced in waste evacuation were linked to access issues at disposal facilities, particularly during the rainy season, which often affects the movement of waste collection vehicles.
To address the situation, he disclosed that LAWMA’s waste-to-wealth partner, ZoomLion Nigeria Limited, has commenced preliminary rehabilitation works on Road E within the Olusosun disposal facility. The intervention is expected to improve accessibility, reduce operational delays, and enhance the efficiency of waste evacuation activities.
The LAWMA boss further revealed that the agency has reactivated and optimized several Transfer Loading Stations (TLSs) across the state to facilitate quicker movement of waste from communities to designated disposal and treatment sites.
As part of efforts to boost operational capacity, the government is also supporting Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators in acquiring additional waste collection vehicles. He added that plans are underway for the deployment of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) compactor trucks, which will significantly improve waste collection and transportation across Lagos.
In addition, 10 new compactor trucks recently donated by the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Board have already been deployed to support waste management operations in various parts of the state.
Dr. Gbadegesin noted that the government has intensified enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal and environmental violations, while a newly established Waste Police initiative involving transport unions and community stakeholders is expected to strengthen monitoring and compliance efforts.
He also disclosed that the state government is exploring partnerships with neighbouring states to complement existing waste disposal infrastructure and improve operational flexibility.
Highlighting LAWMA’s achievements despite prevailing challenges, the Managing Director revealed that the agency received more than 418,500 tonnes of waste at its disposal facilities in May 2026 alone.
He further stated that approximately 3,000 refuse blackspots are being cleared daily through ongoing sanitation operations as part of the government’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner environment.
Dr. Gbadegesin also highlighted the construction of new Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous III, noting that the facilities will divert up to 4,000 tonnes of waste daily to recycling and treatment plants upon completion.
According to him, the projects will help reduce pressure on existing landfill sites while supporting the state’s broader objective of promoting recycling, waste recovery, and sustainable environmental management.
He urged residents to continue patronizing approved PSP operators, avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and support government initiatives aimed at improving environmental sanitation.
The LAWMA chief reassured residents that ongoing interventions would progressively improve waste collection services across the state, reiterating the agency’s commitment to delivering a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
